In New York City's famous Metropolitan Museum of Art, there is a small Chinese bowl painted with the image of a rather goofy-looking dragon prancing across its porcelain surface. When I saw this homely image from the 1700s, I knew I had to find a way to adapt it for the Chinese New Year in the year of the Dragon. The background for the red-orange dragon is a warm gray mauve with pale yellow and brown bands on top and bottom which give a golden effect. The illusion of gold is in the sun as well as in the Chinese characters which translate to Gong Xi Fa Cai, "Happy New Year."
