They are known as 'tomte' in Sweden, 'nissa' in Denmark and Norway, and 'tonttu' in Finland. Legend has it that they live in remote farmhouses and make sure the farmer looks after his livestock and keeps his farm clean. At Christmas they appreciate a bowl of porridge with a knob of butter on top.
