A Cairn Terrier sits in a wash of light with a small flower in its mouth—though “holding” might be generous. It looks more like something it picked up, reconsidered, and kept anyway. The stance isn’t posed. It’s paused. Briefly. Rendered in a loose watercolor style, the coat breaks apart into rough, uneven marks that never quite resolve, which feels right for a dog that rarely does either. The edges stay soft, but the presence doesn’t. There’s a particular kind of certainty in a Cairn. Not showy, not dramatic—just a quiet assumption that wherever it is, that’s where it’s meant to be. No invitation required. This piece holds that moment—the one where you realize you didn’t choose the dog. The dog chose the spot. And you’re standing in it.
