The 15th day of the 8th lunar month is called 'mid-autumn' and the festival held on this day is linked to legends of the mythical Moon Goddess of Immortality. A folk tale tells of the overthrow of the Mongul rule in China brought about by messages smuggled in mooncakes by the revolutionaries. Offered between friends and family, the mooncake is made of a thin pastry covering an inner filling usually made from lotus seed paste with salted duck egg yolks, or black bean paste as illustrated in this design. Alongside the mooncakes, we have a pot of tea and two cups.
