World Goth Day originated in England in 2009 as a day to celebrate and raise awareness about the goth subculture. The date of May 22nd was chosen as it was the birth date of Robert Smith, lead singer of the iconic goth rock band The Cure. On World Goth Day, goth music events, fashion shows, poetry readings, and goth club nights are organized by the goth community around the world. Major gatherings and celebrations take place in cities like London, Leipzig, Moscow, Mexico City and others with large goth scenes. The day allows goths to promote their distinct aesthetic focused on dark fashion, music, and attitudes, while also dispelling stereotypes about the subculture.
