Artist Notes: What a difference 15 years makes! Once the obscenely pampered, self-worshipping Archduchess of Austria, she ultimately became the obscenely pampered, self-worshipping Queen of France in 1774 at the age of 19. In that capacity she would, however, learn compassion for those less fortunate than herself, which was everyone in France except King Louis XVI. So when she was told that the starving French peasants could not even afford the basic necessity of bread, she suggested they eat a luxury that none but the highly privileged could afford: cake. What a gal! Nevertheless we wonder: Did Marie really mean to share her own birthday cake with her starving subjects? I guess we’ll never know. But you can at least share this fanciful take on Marie’s 25th birthday with someone who surely deserves to eat cake! Only from FunnyBone Greetings.
